....MORE IMPROVEMENTS...

cover:

After having very positive feedback from Ali, I have decided to change the title from "Poems and Rhymes - Mushrooms Don't Fright" to the above. Why? Because  i need to make sure that  my chosen audience will recognise that this book is about getting to know and what's more important - learning basic rules of foraging for mushrooms. And there is nothing better that rhymes. I think my audience will be pleasantly surprised what is the content! And I am really positive about the feedback I am going to receive when doing User Testing!

FRONT PAGE:

TITLE: As titles do offer more creativity with the font I have used Noteworthy font at 29pt - it is inviting, pleasant to read -  words are easily formed, there is sufficient spacing between words  for the children to read when they see the book themselves.
AUTHOR: I have fitted it around the hollow so it flows and withs with the shape and at the same time it does not clutter other space on the page. Font used: Skia at 17pt - which works accordingly with the body of rhymes pages.

SPINE:

I have also used Noteworthy at 19pt for the title and 17pt for my name - hierarchy has been understood and kept.

BACK PAGE:

In the blurb I have used Noteworthy at 17pt, but its lighter version...I am not sure about that if it will be legible for the children: again User Testing will do confirm that.

My idea for the PUBLISHER: Gnome Publishing. Here I have decided to use old looking font: Matura MT Script Capitals at 12pt, in order to highlight what it means. Also my idea behind it was to create well established and long lasting Publisher that will recognise the value of my book. If time permits I will try to create a logo also.
Well, I would love to complete the book and do approach such Publishers.

This is first double spread page:

...apart from completing the page, which perhaps looks improved, I have changed the font of the highlighted words in red to Adam Warren Pro at 14ptalso I have reduced the size to the title from 32pt to 29pt.

This is second double page spread:

I have been more creative here..I have included interactive maze ... young children do love them! Fonts are the same as the first page.

SIZE:
Size wise I have decided to create a book size 200mm x 200mm. Reason? Easy to hold, handle and of a good size to be placed on a shelf: neat yet noticeable; as well as in the back bag! :)

***
Next will be my additional features: either cards as I have mentioned in my previous post or Hide and Reveal page. Still all in  a progress.

But right NOW I am ready to do  User Testing! Can't wait......!! :0)
The above pages will be used for User Testing.

TASK 8

There are 3 issues that can effect feedback:
1. Children are more likely to find encountering new places and people stressful which could affect their feedback:
 - Go to your own child's class
 - Ask the teacher to ask the questions
 - Play time before the lesson to get accustomed with them
 - Read a book for them

2.They get tired, bored and quickly and easily discouraged
 - Reward them with stickers
 - Ask their ideas, engage them
 - do activities

3. If the purpose of your questioning is to assess how clear the instruction /information is how would you ensure that they work unaided?
 - select correct age group for the book, correct questions related to age group
 - stimulate imagination with questions
 - give clear instructions/precision - pass information onto them, saying I don't know how?...
 - scoring system
 - reassurance - there is no wrong answer

THOUGHTS....

After my presentation and brief tutorial I have been thinking about my idea to be approached in slightly different way.
The reason being, perhaps is that although I want to create a rhyme book I still need to be careful about the message I want to convey, yet I need to emphasise the fact that foraging for mushroom doesn't have to be scary and can be VERY safe -providing that all rules are applied.

So, I have decided to create double page spread with the picture that depicts reality mirrored by same picture but hand drawn and more child-friendly. I think that this approach will allow for broader understanding and learning, as well as being inquisitive about the world of mushrooms! I have not come accross this idea anywhere and wonder if it will work....
And as I have mentioned during my presentation, I will create an additional feature:like a pocket size book emphasising what mushrooms children can find in the woods - the book will have pictures of real representation of these mushrooms or a page with hide and reveal mushrooms, perhaps followed by spare empty pages for children to write or draw what else they have found or seen in the woods or even interactive puzzles.

In a way this mushroom rhyme book will be one belonging to the whole collection of other books with similar theme for example: about berries, or nuts or even edible creatures you can find by the sea.
